For women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) — a debilitating form of PMS that affects between 3 and 6 percent of women — and from negative side effects of their anti-depressant medication, Yale Psychiatry professor Kimberly Yonkers is searching for a way to ease their monthly pain.

I have had PMS since my son was born 19 years ago. I have been a nurse for over 23 years and over the past ten years, it has gotten worse. I tried to overdose about 8 years ago, and in the last 5 years have been fired from two positions, with all of the above happening about 2-5 days prior to the onset of my period. I lost my job last month, and have subsequently lost insurance for me and my family, and being the primary bread winner for the family, am drastically behind on bills. I have been to many different doctors over the course of the last 19 years and have been on and off the following meds, paxil, prozac, lasix, wellbutrin, effexor, trazadone, xanax, ativan, valium, seroquel, topamax, B-complex, magnesium, calcium, zinc, multi-vits, herbal meds, diets, exercises, and various birth control pills(there is probably some I am missing). My husband and children say I yell alot, my facial expressions, non-verbal expressions, and even my voice changes before I get my period. I have all the "standard" pre-menstrual symptoms, but also have a very sort fuse and even have "melt-downs" with little things like a coat that won't stay on a hanger, or not being able to get the drain stopper out of the kitchen sink, or even a group of hangers which get twisted and I can't get them untwisted. But the minute I get my period, ALL of the above changes! My family likes me and I like me. It must be like living with Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde!! Please help me before I loose my career or worse, my family.
