Disordered eating

You count calories, you exercise daily, you’ve gone on crash diets to lose weight — but you tell yourself you’re just “living healthy.”

Agreed. I think this is one of the biggest problems on Yale's campus and yet no one seemse willing to address it.

Some of the young schoolgirls I know snack through the day, in addition to having big meals. The meals include large quantities of fat and sugar. When they get to college they will probably go on a crash diet. This is what happened to me, and I went on 'all protein' diets, which are quite harmful, and so forth. Eventually I found that simply by not snacking, and by limiting my breakfast and lunch to low fat easy to digest foods like fruit and cereal, I felt a whole lot better, plus I looked a whole lot better. My main point here is that people who diet in college may be addressing a real problem, but perhaps without much knowledge of how to effectively address it.

Thank you, Hanna. I understand the health and social issues surrounding crash diets and disordered eating, but let's face it, eating huge meals and snacking all day (usually while studying) is also not healthy and should not be supported. Many people who develop these disordered eating habits are actually attempting to address a problem. It is my opinion that most of these people simply don't know how to lose weight or eat in a healthy manner. The solution is not to reject ideas of dieting or losing weight, but to educate people on healthy eating habits/portions.
