Harvard University tapped a member of Yale’s Investment Committee on Thursday to take the helm of its world-leading $34.9 billion endowment. Jane Mendillo ’80 SOM ’84, the chief investment officer at Wellesley College, will become the new president and chief executive officer of the Harvard Management Company effective July 1, the HMC’s board of directors announced.

This makes 167 Harvard references in YDN stories since January 1.

i don't know what people's problems are about references to other colleges - i would like to know what's happening at fellow institutions

Yale's class of 1980 is cornering the market on managing both Harvard and Yale's endowment. Dave Swensen GRD '80 was a popular freshman counselor for Berkeley's class of '80 in 1976-77, and Dean Takahashi '80 is his second in command.

To be sure, its nice to keep up on "what's happening at fellow institutions", but sometimes the YDN obsession with all things Harvard seems borderline unhealthy. Of course this Harvard-centrism is nothing new.

Congratulations Harvard, on landing Jane Mendillo! If only she could teach your students about fun!

Regarding "Harvard-centrism:"

Having been in the work force for several years, I can testify that Elis and Cantabs are working side-by-side in many desirable work settings. That might not be so palatable to current Yale undergrads, but it's a reality of the workforce and academia. The rivalry becomes more about good-natured jokes and less about enmity. Just accept it now that Harvard is an inescapable part of your future.

I suspect the people upset by mentions of Harvard actually wanted to go there (poor souls). I hope I'm among the many who can say, "Harvard? I didn't have to apply there after being accepted by my first choice."

This is not a reference to Harvard, per se: it is a testament to Yale--the woman is managing HMC's ENDOWMENT for cryin' out loud! Go, go, GO Mendillo!

[On the other hand--perhaps she is a Manchurian Candidate, soon to send HMC's performance to the bottom of the barrel in some CDS/ABCP swap debacle! Hey, I can dream, can't I?]

But seriously--she's awesome!
