In a visit to the Yale Law School on Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff condemned a New Haven program that offers municipal identification cards to illegal immigrants, assailing the initiative as the wrong answer to a problem that falls under the purview of Congress. “Enabling people to break the law,” Chertoff told students in response to a question about the program, “is not something that I can endorse.”

This is a broad elaboration of a small relatively comment Chertoff made in response to a question. Besides ignoring the entire speech to focus on the response to one question, this article also ignores the fact that Chertoff was just as critical of other make-shift local responses to immigration issues like those initiatives that have tried to prevent people from renting to illegal aliens. Additionally, it casts him as being entirely against illegal aliens, when his point was really that illegal immigration is a national problem that needs a national, comprehensive solution. He acknowledged that there needs to be a way to allow those currently living here to stay and become legal, saying that there was no way he could ever see us deporting 12 million people.

Unfortunately this article takes "finding an angle" to an extreme, and ignores any balance in pursuing that angle.

Did you read the ENTIRE OTHER STORY on Chertoff's speech? Jeez. Read the newspaper before you post your ill-informed vitriol.

The presence of another story does not change the fact that this "article" heavily misconstrued Chertoff by not even mentioning the other half of what he said regarding the IDs.

It mentioned that he called for Congress to pass immigration reform ("rather than relying on local municipalities to respond to the issue with a multiplicity of policies") THREE times, which was the only other thing he said during the Q&A on the topic of the IDs. And how would you know "the other half" of what Chertoff said in a closed-doors interview?

He said that New Haven and San Francisco were one end of an extreme, while cities in Virginia were the other end. Congress' passing a national solution would be a compromise. This is very different from "blasting" Elm City IDs. His response was measured and diplomatic; the article is biased and inflammatory.

Deport all illegal aliens. Not pleasant at all, but required. They shouldn't be here in the first place, and do not belong. Third world diseases are coming back, along with the illegal residents who are criminals here under coded U.S. Law.

Only an idiot would allow it to continue..

It's unfortunate that this will probably be news to many, but Chertoff has called for "reform" many times. In fact, he's in effect blackmailed the U.S., saying that he won't do his job without "reform". Chertoff is simply a Bush lackey who does what Bush wants, and Bush does what whoever it is that pulls his strings want. Those profiting from Bush's unwillingness to enforce our laws include the MexicanGovernment, growers, chicken processors, banks, and many more.

Search at my site for "New Haven" for some interesting information on your local officials.

Greetings from Los Angeles. Now that we know Elm City wants illegal aliens, we're preparing flyers describing your ID program in Spanish & Nahuatl and raising funds for maps and travel tickets. With any luck, 3,000,000 of our illegals are headed your way. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have!
