As Mayor John DeStefano Jr. stood before the podium at a press conference at New Haven Police Department headquarters last Friday, he emphasized two trends in the city’s quarterly crime report. As statistics breakdowns flashed in succession on a projector screen to his left, the message was clear. “Violent crimes are down. Burglaries are up,” the mayor said on multiple occasions, stressing the quarterly report’s most prominent results to the reporters in the room.

When I attended the divinity school I was an apartment superintendent on Elm Streeet on the fringe of the ghetto, 1978-85. Yale could ameliorate some of the frustration of the poor who border its campus by creating an apprenticeship program: Start in this low level job at Yale and work your way up. In fact, our entire society needs to bring back apprenticeship as a respectable parallel career alternative to the privileged college track. If it was good enough for Benjamin Franklin it ought to be good enough for an entire generation of kids who see nothing in their future but basketball, rap and designer hair. Believe it or not, there is a future out there in the world of computer technology, for instance, for people who don't go to college. Computers are egalitarian: they do not know whether the fingers on the keyboard or the mouse have educational pedigree or not. It seems counterintuitive to expect Yale to promote a non-academic career path for the poor. There is a China on Elm Street Dixwell, Goffe and Whalley Avenues and the site of your new residential colleges, lower Prospect hill, dear Yale. It can be ignored or it can be harnessed.
