What’s in a (Yale) Typeface?
I've always been ashamed to admit this, but I actually chose Yale because of its font.
This is no joking matter. I turned down 10 other schools because their fonts were worse than Yale's typeface. This is a serious issue in admissions and they would be wise not to forget it.
Where could one obtain the Yale typeface, preferably in TTF scaleable format? I'm a student/collector of typefaces.
seriously, though, this is interesting stuff. the way places brand says a lot about them.
the typeface is available here:

Inexplicably, the Yale Alumni Magazine switched from the typeface described here (or at least one very similar to it) to an all cap logo that irks me every issue. Please get with the program, YAM.
Dude, that Q is out of control. Rein it in, Matt.
We have gotten some feedback that people are trying to download the Yale typeface but having trouble installing it. So here's some help: After logging in with your NetID and registering, save the "YaleFonts_PC.zip" to your desktop (whether you're on a PC or Mac). For very clear instructions on how to extract the fonts from the ZIP archive and install them, see Hoefler & Frere-Jones' instructions at http://typography.com/ask/topics.php?topicID=9 under "Opening the .zip file you've downloaded" and "How to install fonts." If you have any further problems or questions, feel free to send them to me at my Yale e-mail address, reed.reibstein@...
If the Yale typeface has piqued your interest in good typography, take a peek around the Hoefler & Frere-Jones site (typography.com) to see some beautiful typefaces. They have a significant price tag, but they're well worth the cost.
I think I love Yale a little more for having had that font developed.
If this font were female, I would definitely have sex with it.
Yup...it's all about sex. Notice how the view book was "spread out in front of her" and how the typeface "stood out to the students". Do you need to say more than "here it is?" No way! Yale is confident, and just....there...what a turn on!

I'm really glad that someone wrote an article on this! Without a doubt, Yale's distinctive typeface was a contributing (albeit minimal) factor in my decision to apply. It really is effective in speaking volumes about the spirit of the school.
