Atticus repeals English-only policy

Atticus Bookstore and Café on Chapel Street last week repealed an employee policy that forbade employees from using foreign languages within earshot of customers, Atticus supervisor Martin Muroz said Wednesday. The move followed pressure from local community groups such as the New Haven Workers Association, a group of local labor leaders and activists, and city officials such as Ward 15 Alderman Joseph Rodriguez.

New NHPD chief to be named today

Mayor John DeStefano Jr. is set to reveal the city's new police chief today at 1 p.m.

New Haven Police Department Chief James Lewis announced that he would be leaving New Haven in December, and he departed Feb. 26.

NBC to broadcast Yale rugby

In what is probably the first ever appearance of college rugby on broadcast television, NBC will televise the first Rugby Sevens college championship, featuring Yale's rugby team.

NBC will broadcast the tournament, held in Columbus, Ohio, at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday.

Yugoslav dissident who taught at Yale dies

Mihajlo Mihajlov, a prominent dissident in the former Yugoslavia who later taught at Yale, died in Belgrade on Sunday, Agence France-Presse reports. He was 76.

Brenzel: 'It's the student who makes something out of college.'

In an article about college admissions, posted Thursday on The Huffington Post, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel said high school students and their parents have “reversed the equation” when it comes to prioritizing what matters when applying to college. Brenzel said it is not the name of the college a student attends that determines his or her success in life, but rather, "it's the student who makes something out of college," he told The Huffington Post.

Jaywalking sting returns. Policemen were back on Elm Street on Thursday, ticketing unlucky jaywalkers as they hurried to class.

Going to Scotland for break? Bulldog Pipes and Drums, a bagpiping group, gave its first performances of the year on Old Campus and Cross Campus on Thursday.

Before leaving for break, don’t forget to cover your microwaves. An e-mail sent to all Old Campus residents by a facilities superintendent warned students about removing all trash in their rooms and bringing all recyclable items to the appropriate locations.

Caught in da Club. After finishing lunch in the rooftop dining room of the Yale Club of New York, New York Governor David Paterson unsuccessfully tried to escape reporters Thursday afternoon through a side exit. Reporters questioned Paterson about whether he plans to resign amid recent reports of scandal.

Library lockdown in Cambridge. A Harvard senior studying in the Harvard Law School Library last weekend accidentally stayed past the closing time and was locked inside the building. He escaped after contacting the Harvard University Police Department via Skype.

Filling in the bl_nks. Registration for the Fourth Annual Yale Crossword Puzzle Tournament were announced Thursday. This year’s competition will feature the inimitable New York Times’ crossword editor, Will Shortz.

Robert S. Sherwin, M.D., an internationally renowned diabetes researcher, has been appointed chief of endocrinology in the department of internal medicine at the Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale School of Medicine.

During Thursday’s National Day of Action for Public Education, hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and parents joined in the protests across the country. Protestors held rallies at the University of California-Berkeley, threw punches and ice chunks at police at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and shut down an interstate highway in Oakland, Calif.

A Harvard senior studying in the Harvard Law School Library last weekend encountered every undergraduate's worst nightmare: confusing the library's hours of operation, Timothy S. Kim accidentally stayed past the closing time and was locked inside the building, according to an article posted Wednesday on the Harvard Crimson's FlyBy Blog. Worse, he had left his cell phone in his dorm room.

Spotted: Starchitect Frank Gehry getting out of a taxi in front of the Yale University Art Gallery. Gehry, a Harvard Graduate School of Design dropout, is responsible for the brain-breaking design of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the super-shiny Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles — as well as the Yale-New Haven

Yalie wants to succeed the Governator. Ultra-liberal California Attorney General Edmund “Jerry” Brown LAW ’64 formally announced his run for governor on Wednesday.

Good samaritans. Yale Police Chief James Perrotti notified students that an attempted assault on a woman Wednesday afternoon was foiled by the woman’s loud screams, which scared her attacker away. The man was caught by passersby “who heard the screams and quickly responded to aid the woman,” Perrotti wrote.

Your spring break getaway is safe. Sun and mild temperatures are expected all weekend — instead of another snowpocalypse like the one that caused massive disruptions to air and ground travel this past December.

Just in time for spring break, Amtrak has added Wi-Fi to some of its trains. Amtrak Connect, a complimentary wireless Internet service, is now available in the business and first class seating sections of all 20 high-speed Acela Express trains that travel between Boston and Washington, D.C., according to a statement released by Amtrak Tuesday.

A silent candlelight vigil for the victims of the earthquake in Chile, organized by the Chaplain's Office and the Latin American Student Organization, will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. in Dwight Hall Chapel.

A lonely day at the polls: Andy Feldman ’11 was the only Yale student to vote in Tuesday’s election for Ward 22 Democratic Committee co-chair. Ward 22 represents students living in Ezra Stiles, Morse, Silliman and Timothy Dwight colleges.
