A bad day for 'safe streets'

A truck knocked over a center divider on Broadway St. Friday afternoon.

Rush hour traffic at the intersection of Broadway and York St. was held up for about 30 minutes starting just before 5 p.m. today when two accidents occurred almost simultaneously.

A Napoli Foods truck was heading down Broadway towards Elm when it tried to turn back up Broadway and knocked over a fence in the center divider. The truck, driven by Matthew Gryzbek of Meriden, Conn., popped a tire.

Gryzbek said he was trying to avoid a blue Toyota SUV parked in the loading dock in front of Cutler’s Records & Tapes and was not able to make a wide enough turn.

“So I got screwed,” he said, adding that he had been delivering supplies to Something Fishy on Dixwell Ave.

Meanwhile, a vehicle rear-ended a black sedan in the intersection, causing a few scratches but no injuries.

Yale police officers at the scene said traffic took about half an hour to clear up.
