Ward 1 chooses Obama over Clinton LAW '73 by 3-1 margin 2.05.08
Despite her visit to New Haven yesterday and her Yale affiliation, Senator Hillary Clinton LAW '73 earned only 23 percent of the Yale-heavy Ward 1 vote while Sen. Barack Obama garnered 75 percent — and is now projected to win Connecticut at large by a slim margin. Few Republicans voted in Ward 1, but of those who did, 28 — or about 50 percent — voted for Sen. John McCain, 16 chose former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, eight embraced Congressman Ron Paul and three turned to former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., the winners for Connecticut at large had been projected — and appeared to reflect New Haven's preferences: McCain and Obama were poised win with most precincts reporting. 790 people voted today in Ward 1, which includes students who live on Old Campus or in Berkeley, Branford, Trumbull, Saybrook, Calhoun, Silliman, Timothy Dwight or Jonathan Edwards Colleges. In Ward 22, meanwhile, Obama swept overwhelmingly, earning nearly 84 percent of the vote. Ward 22 includes students in Davenport, Ezra Stiles, Morse and Pierson Colleges as well as Swing Space.
