Several Democratic senators, including John Kerry '66, Arlen Specter LAW '54 and Joseph Lieberman '64 LAW '67, spoke out on Wednesday in favor of the nomination of Harold Hongju Koh to be legal adviser to the Department of State. One Republican, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, spoke out against Koh.

Senate approves Koh nomination 6.25.09

The Senate voted 62 to 35 on Thursday to confirm former Yale Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh for the position of legal adviser to the Department of State.

Five Republicans joined the Democratic majority in support of Koh’s nomination, which was the subject of intense criticism from conservatives who said Koh would subvert American sovereignty in favor of international law in his new post.
