Evangelist causes a stir 12.04.09

Jesse Morrell — a 25-year-old evangelist preacher from Cheshire, Conn., who said he did three stints at the juvenile detention center on Whalley Avenue for selling drugs — says he knows where most Yale students are headed: hell.

I love that "Obama voters" is on his list of terrible sinners.

#2 By Marc 7:28p.m. on December 4, 2009

Hahaha...right between "Masturbators" and "Buddhists".

#3 By Drew 8:20p.m. on December 4, 2009

How exciting! Homosexuals have moved down to number 2! Were not worse than fornicators anymore... though Im apparently going to hell for nine different reasons. :/

#4 By Brett 8:21p.m. on December 4, 2009

This is amazing! When is this preacher coming back? There should be an encore performance.

#5 By Jack 10:51p.m. on December 4, 2009

If there's no god, there's no heaven... so, Atheists? hahaha.

#6 By Becca 1:07a.m. on December 5, 2009

Huh. No Wiccans on his list. Hardly very inclusive.

#7 By gdub 1:31a.m. on December 5, 2009

does he not realize that at least a few of those items are essentially duplications?

#8 By JohnVisser 1:43a.m. on December 5, 2009

Well, let's see - I'm a fornicator, a homosexual, a masturbator, an Obama voter, a drunkard, a Democrat, a liberal, an evolutionist, an atheist, and a sodomite - oh, and apparently I'm screwed. At least in Hell there wont be any right-wing-sexually-oppressed-bible-beating-conservative-nutcases. LOL!!

#9 By Jonathan 2:55a.m. on December 5, 2009

@ JohnVisser: Yes, if they’re all going to see teh baby jebus, then I’ll take “hell”. BTW, I scored 12. Wait, this isn’t a game?

#10 By caphillprof 7:24a.m. on December 5, 2009

Is it possible that teabagger's heaven is actually hell and they just don't know it.

#11 By Steve 12:04p.m. on December 5, 2009

Did anyone notice what was rather conveniently NOT on Mr. Nutcase's list of sins? It's very telling. Not on the list: DRUG-DEALERS! Why is that telling? Read the cut-line under the photograph. Mr. Nutcase WAS a drug-dealer! Funny, how in his aggressive condemnation of other people's sins, he's conveniently managed leave his own off the list. Cute. And so predictable.

#12 By Randy 3:07p.m. on December 5, 2009

Okay, this is pretty funny. But I see something a bit more interesting going on here.

Not too long ago, straight people were grossed out by the sight of two men kissing. Even holding hands engendered rude comments.

Today, two men can kiss openly and the straights find it fun! The people in the photo can't all be gay -- they are probably mostly straight. They are obviously cheering on the couple, and several are straining to get a look.

This is simply amazing. In just a few years, we have gone from seeing PDAs as disgusting and gross to something to be celebrated.

We have won the revolution. We now just have to wait for the results.

#13 By Randy 3:23p.m. on December 5, 2009

Bigger picture note: What's also interesting is the fact that religion now has nothing left to offer but fear. That's all they have left. They don't talk about love. Nothing about compassion. Certainly nothing about giving up your wealth (which Jesus said is the only way to the kingdom of heaven).

Nope. Nothing but fear. I feel very sorry for any people who are so wrapped up in fear it's all they have in their world.

#14 By Wesley 3:25p.m. on December 5, 2009

Who wears sandwich boards to protests any more? That's so two decades ago!

#15 By Robert 5:01p.m. on December 5, 2009

This made my day! I scored 13! :)

#16 By Philly Bob 5:33p.m. on December 5, 2009

Shouldn't PROTESTERS be on that list as well....

#17 By ck 6:25p.m. on December 5, 2009

Randy, with all due respect, please educate yourself in terms of what the Bible says as 'the only way to the kingdom of heaven' before spreading ill-advised half-truths. The best source is for you to consult the Bible yourself. The Bible may say the LOVE of money is the root of all evil (note: it does NOT say MONEY is the root of all evil - this is, in fact, one of the most oft-misused quotes from the Bible) and may also say that it is easier to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get to heaven, but to the best of my knowledge, nowhere does it say that the only way to heaven is to give up all of your money. That is simply absurd. But again, this is as I know the Bible...please go directly to the source if you're interested.

Also, Christianity is not based on fear, and this is another convenient 'truth' that people use to denigrate those with faith. I am extremely liberal and a Christian, and Christianity, as I know it, is about the unconditional love that God has for us. In fact, it states pretty directly that every one of us is a sinner - and none more so than any other (sin being defined as anything that separates you from the perfection of God, I believe) - and that the only way to salvation is through Christ by accepting him in your heart as having died for your sins. Which is a pretty simple request, in my humble opinion.

Judgment-spewing 'evangelists' like this give true Christianity a bad name - don't simply stereo-type or over-generalize all of Christianity before you make an honest attempt to really understand it yourself by going directly to the source.

No, that's just YALE, lolmg. This coulda (and did) happen 5 years, 10 years ago, etc. at Yale and the picture would've been the same.

Conversely, take this picture in 2010 anywhere south of let's say North Carolina, and there will be a lot more people with signs and a lot more people in the background with ropes in hand :(

Funny picture. The guy with the board must be joking. Got some more cartoons for him :)

im from central CT and he came to our school a couple weeks ago too. we rick-rolled him off campus, quite literally. we turned it into a dance party.
from what ive seen about him was that he is 21 and from newington. and that he not only sold drugs but frequently did them. so who knows what is true?

#21 By D Aymett 12:49a.m. on December 7, 2009

CK: What Jesus said was that if you would be perfect, sell all that you have, give it to the poor and you will have riches stored up in heaven. So, yeah, he thought that the way to heaven was to give up all your money. Luke 18:22, in case you want to "go to the source" and see for yourself.

Personally, from the list, I think I'd rather laugh with sinners than cry with the saints myself.

#22 By DeafDragQueen 11:05p.m. on December 7, 2009

I am glad that Jesse's intolerance did not affect his ability to color-coordinate...everything he wore matches!

#23 By Hannah 4:51p.m. on December 8, 2009

Randy, don't assume that everyone in the south is like this guy. Nearly this exact same thing happened at my southern college (UGA) last year (two guys stood in front of an obnoxious open air preacher holding hands and lifted their hands up for everyone to see) and everyone cheered for them as well. Nobody had "ropes in hand"; I'm tired of people assuming that people from the south are all intolerant rednecks.

#24 By Luipaard 7:41p.m. on December 8, 2009

It's guys like these that keep me from registering with the GOP. Screw you, sandwich-board-drug-dealer-man!

#25 By Chandler 9:04a.m. on December 9, 2009

I scored 14! Take that, beyotches! But I have to tell the truth, I sort of lied about lying. If I lied about it here, does that count? Also I claimed immodest women; does camping it up sometimes count? OK, I admit I'm stretching this, but I WANT THAT G.D. GOLD MEDAL!

#26 By Ed-words 11:04a.m. on December 9, 2009

I don't want to see passionate kisses in public whatever the sex.

It's not illegal, but very tacky.

Do it where you're supposed to.

In your parent's bedroom.

#27 By Mike 9:47p.m. on December 9, 2009

I hope he's hanging his head in shame there

#28 By CK 12:38p.m. on December 10, 2009

I think the best way to respond to such silly, hyperbolic, illogical displays is to ignore them. The preacher guy is seeking attention and receiving it: one should give their attention to something more meaningful and substantial. He doesn't warrant the time and attention and debate.

#29 By I heart Yale. And fornication. 3:55a.m. on December 12, 2009

Yeah, I agree with the people who said 'that's not the world, that's just Yale.' And also with the kid from UGA. I think maybe it's a college campus thing (although not all college campuses ... and like, at Yale it really is quite common to see two guys making out. Which is really different from seeing two guys holding hands; though it is so great that that happened on your campus and that people cheered). If two guys were making out in a public place in D.C., where I'm from, there would be a lot of trouble for them from older people. I guess it bodes well for our generation ...

I do feel kind of bad for the Christian community at Yale though (slash all Christians everywhere who believe in love etc). There were a lot of them who were really hurt by this guy's show, because he totally does not represent their beliefs or how they want to interact with people in the world. For a lot of people, or so I hear, Christianity is a powerful and lovely thing (and totally compatible with being gay, an Obama voter, etc). It really sucks that people like this guy use a religion based in love to such hateful ends.

How come everyone in that picture is so ugly?

#31 By Harvard rules! 3:51p.m. on January 23, 2010

Second as gay and last as sodomites. We've come a long way.

Wow. So apparently I am going to Hell for five reasons. Interesting, considering that the teachings of Christ are about love and forgiveness through His grace. As a fellow Christian, I feel that while I appreciate that he's trying to spread the word of Christ, he's taking it a bit too far. Saying that Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims are going to Hell just because they practice a different religion is going way to far.
