Two professors win election to Institute of Medicine

Two Yale School of Medicine researchers have been elected by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., to memberships that recognize major contributions to health and medicine.

Bennett A. Shaywitz, a professor of pediatrics and neurology, and Department of Epidemiology and Public Health lecturer Bradford H. Gray were elected in mid-October. Their new memberships will allow them to work on behalf of the organization and assist on committees that conduct studies of national health policy issues.

Shaywitz, the director of child neurology in the Department of Pediatrics, was recognized for transforming studies of dyslexia, a reading disability, from a social-cultural movement into its current status in the field of neuroscience. His wife, Sally, was also elected by the Institute of Medicine for work in the same field.

Gray, who also serves as director of the Division of Health and Science Policy at the New York Academy of Medicine, has produced extensive research on how organizational and institutional factors shape the performance of health care professionals. Recently, he and colleagues have conducted empirical research on key issues regarding managed care and health care.
