Connecticut gas prices drop 20 cents in time for vacation

Gasoline prices in the state have fallen as much as 20 cents over the last six weeks, the American Automobile Association's Connecticut Motor Club reported Tuesday.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Connecticut is $1.32, down from $1.52 at the beginning of October, AAA said. The current price also is 52 cents lower than the all-time high of $1.84 in May, AAA said.

The national average price for regular unleaded gas is $1.19 per gallon, down 27 cents since October.

Connecticut has the second-highest gas prices in the Northeast. New York tops the list with an average price of $1.33 per gallon of regular unleaded. Vermont is third with an average of $1.29, and Rhode Island is fourth with an average of $1.25 per gallon, AAA reported.

AAA surveyed about 1,000 gas stations in Connecticut.

The falling prices will be a bonus for motorists planning to travel on Thanksgiving in two weeks, AAA said.

The association is expecting overall travel nationwide to be down as much as 6 percent during the holiday compared with last year. It also predicts that the number of Americans traveling by car during the holiday will be down by less than 2 percent.
