We should seek a broader human solidarity
We should seek a broader human solidarity
Thursday, September 20, 2001
To the Editor:
I hope the News' View ("Heeding the call of our time," 10/17) is correct in predicting that the era of socially irresponsible individualism is over. But I am dismayed that the News proposes to replace it with a narrow version of solidarity -- nationalism -- of a broader human solidarity that would lead us to seek an end to the global injustice of which last week's events were both a symptom and a augmentation.
We should mourn last week's events not because they were directed against America but because they involved the deaths of thousands of people.
If, as the editorial prematurely announces, "we have agreed on an agenda," I hope it is not the militaristic one the News irresponsibly trumpets.
