Police make arrest in Feb. 27 murder of New Haven man

New Haven police have arrested a man in connection with the late February murder of 37-year-old Anthony Avery.

Detectives arrested Shonta McPherson, 22, of New Haven, at approximately 8:15 a.m. yesterday morning and charged him with Avery's murder. McPherson is being held without bond.

Avery was shot in the chest on Feb. 24 near the Truman Elementary School in the Hill neighborhood and was subsequently pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital. It was the city's first homicide of the year.
