Lightweight crew coach confirms suspensions of seven freshman rowers

Lightweight crew head coach Andrew Card confirmed the report that he suspended seven lightweight freshman rowers indefinitely, but declined to elaborate further on the incident or to name the freshmen.

"Seven members of the Yale freshman lightweight crew have been suspended for violations of team policy," Card wrote in an e-mail Feb. 12. "The seven include four recruited athletes and three walk-ons. The suspensions are for an indefinite period of time."

Card added, "I am very comfortable that the statement I issued is enough commentary from me on this matter."

On Feb. 8, Card informed Director of Athletics Tom Beckett that he planned to suspend the freshmen.

Members of the lightweight crew team would not comment on the suspensions.

The seven suspended team members had a history of disciplinary problems throughout the year, sources confirmed.
