Ward 23 Alderman Yusuf Shah said he plans to erect a granite memorial wall in remembrance of children and teenagers killed by gun violence in New Haven by July. Shah said he has not yet found funding or a location for the memorial, but he is looking for a site close to downtown. The wall will not be a “glorification” of street violence, Shah maintained, but will serve as a call for New Haven residents to mentor local youths by helping fund their college education and keeping them off the streets. “This will be a memorial of awareness,” Shah said. “The shooting and killing in our streets must stop.”

I don't know where the money that will pay for this monument is coming from, and I certainly acknowledge/respect the unfortunate loss of far too many innocent lives in this city....but it must be said: perhaps this money would be better spent in combatting the problem.
