Briefly: Connecticut AG to challenge New York City commuter tax

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal LAW ’73 pledged to fight a proposed New York City commuter tax. Claiming it would unconstitutionally tax Connecticut residents by forcing them to pay additional amounts for working in New York City, Blumenthal said the tax must also apply to commuting New York state residents. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg proposed the tax to help close the city’s massive budget gap. Blumenthal successfully challenged a similar measure in 1999, arguing it violated the Privileges and Immunity, Commerce and Equal Protection clauses of the U.S. Constitution.
