Over 1,880 students signed up to donate the value of their dining hall swipes Thursday to the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project fast, Christopher Lewine, the Dwight Hall public relations coordinator, said Wednesday night. The money from participating students’ accounts that would normally go toward their meals will be given to Yale’s chapter of Shelter Now, a student-run, multi-college organization hoping to keep open a homeless shelter that serves hundreds of people during New Haven’s coldest months. Thursday’s fast raised around $13,500 — compared to around $8,000 in the past — putting the total money raised by Shelter Now this semester at $25,000, $5,000 over its initial goal. This money will constitute 25 percent of the total funds needed to keep the overflow shelter operational.

Something else is clearly going on...that works out to a little more than $7 per participating student. That's less than the "per guest" cost of one lunch in the dining halls. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner for one day would be more like $28 per person at the guest rates. What gives?
