Around New Haven: City officer still in critical condition

New Haven Police Department Officer Diane Gonzalez remained in critical condition Thursday evening, city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga said. Gonzalez was responding to a report of a domestic-violence incident, a man allegedly beating a woman outside at 53-55 Maltby St., when her car collided with that of NHPD Sgt. Dario Aponte on Sept. 9. Gonzalez sustained head injuries from the crash. Aponte, a 17-year veteran of the NHPD, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Police later charged the two individuals involved with the domestic-violence call with breach of peace.
