Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick GRD ’75, a founder of queer theory and prominent literary critic, died on Sunday at age 58. Sedgwick was known for her pioneering work in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies. Perhaps her most famous work, “Epistemology of the Closet,” was published in 1990. She wrote her first book, “Between Men: English Literature and Homosocial Desire” in 1985, and the New York Times dubbed it “one of the most influential texts in gender studies, men’s studies and gay studies.” In 2002, Sedgwick was awarded Yale’s Brudner Memorial Prize, honoring her for her life’s work in the field of LGBT studies.
