Toad's raided

Toad's Place was raided by the Connecticut Liquor Control Commission at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Toad's owner Brian Phelps said. He said the commission found two underage patrons consuming liquor, and that it is possible those who were caught were using fake identification.

Although Phelps said he does not know what could happen as a result of Saturday's bust, he speculated that Toad's could be fined. He said this type of raid is "very nerve-racking." The last time Toad's was raided was in 2005, Phelps said.

The club was shut down for about half an hour. When it reopened at approximately 12 a.m., it was nearly empty.

"More room for Yale students," Phelps said.

Patrons interviewed who were in the club during the raid said the lights were turned on.

"I was dancing, having a good time, and now I'm not," Quinnipiac University sophomore Zachary Smith said while standing on Elm Street.

Devin Covitz, also a sophomore at Quinnipiac said most of the exits to the club were blocked off.

Feel sorry for all the underage students. But I have to say that it made dancing all the easier (and more fun) without the usual mob-scene that is Toads. Almost makes you wish there were raids more often.

If there were seriously only two underage patrons at Toad's last night, then the owner should be commended by the police...

If only the state police spent half as much energy finding people who are in the United States illegally rather than people who are at Toad's illegally...

What a surprise! You'd find an underage person at any bar in New Haven on any given night. Some detectives they are.

3, lets not use the veil of anonymity to promote even more fear-mongering and xenophobia. FYI, the "state police" have no jurisdiction over immigration, which is a FEDERAL issue. What are you proposing? the CT State liquor commission start raiding Yale dorms, and detaining and racially profiling students on the street because what, they look "foreign?" Lets leave the bigotry somewhere else, shall we?

New Haven Police should be embarressed, they act like they own the world and all they do is treat people that are not bothering them like animals. Even if you try and talk to one of them about anything they dont want to listen. They should all be locked up themselves instead of harrassing us college students. My yale degree doesnt look so great with my alcohol ticket now. Every college kid drinks why ruin our futures for something so stupid. Just some food for thought everyone.

Fake identification? Imagine that!

what a dumb move by the police! 11:30 pm is way too early to raid toad's. if they wanted to get all the underage drinkers, they should have come around 12:30 or 1...

How do you waste your time raiding an establishment that is 19+?

If you are underage and the lights are turned on signifying a raid, how are you so stupid that you don't get rid of your drink (by ya know just dropping it on the floor or something...)?

Guess it's now official -- raiding Toad's is about as much a pastime for local and state police as going to Toad's is for Yale undergrads.

@#11--who cares about your Yale degree--it is a college degree; the same as any other.

I really hope more Yale students would get arrested, and I sincerely hope the two were not Q-Pac students. I am a Yale alumnus and wish every Yale student would get a taste of reality--that their degrees do not entitle them to any more or any less than anyone else.

"Don't drop your degree (I mean soap) in the New Haven lock up, Yalies!!!

A Jersey Shore-free evening was always the draw of Wednesday night Toads for me!

Toad's was serving underage when I worked at the old Panikoffs Jewelers on Broadway in the late 70's. Along with every other bar in New Haven. And #11, just hope Yale never does away with thier police department. Think you have problems now with the New Haven Police? They just drool at the thought of finally getting to you without the YPD daycare service getting in the way. Wait till Ortiz becomes head of police and security at Yale, we'll see how much access his old friends on New Haven get to campus and the students.

@#18- AMEN!

@#16- Is that the full extent of your conception of the World and using your degree to its full potential--a career in finance? What a joke! Just like the rest of you!

Sounds like someone couldn't get a job in finance...

I believe Toads is a place where all of the "Underage Drinkers" know they can get in with fake ID's and get a drink. Toads has been serving Minors for years and will continue to do so. They make so much money, it is worth the risk for Phelps to continue the practice. I think the Liquor Agents should have the power to arrest and shut down bars when ever a Minor is found in the bar and or in possission of an alcoholic drink.
