Chain grocer Stop & Shop will move into the Whalley Avenue building that once housed the supermarket Shaw's, the company announced in a press release Tuesday.
The Dwight Place location of Stop & Shop will open its doors sometime this spring or early summer, said Linda Townsend Maier, the president of the Greater Dwight Development Corporation. Before it opens, Stop & Shop plans to pursue "major renovations" of the 56,000 square foot store that Shaw's occupied until last March, when Shaw's parent company, Supervalu, announced it would be closing all Connecticut locations of the grocer.
"This is a great step forward for economic and community development," Mayor John DeStefano Jr. said in the release. "I commend the partners that worked together to bring a full service grocery store back to this section of New Haven."
