Despite city’s objections, Tweed pushes for expansion
Many Yalies from out of state or country are familiar with flying into LaGuardia or Bradley International Airports to get to campus, but plans are in the works to make New Haven’s own airport, Tweed, a more frequented terminal.
But obstacles persist.
The Board of Aldermen met Thursday at City Hall with two members of Tweed’s Airport Authority Board, a 14-member volunteer committee that oversees the airport’s development. The members discussed how the Airport Authority intends to procure both community support and funding for its proposals, which are aimed at reviving an...
Given how important being able to get to/from campus is to the success of the university, there are 3 projects that I'm really surprised Yale hasn't put its political and financial muscle behind:
1) Expansion of Tweed so that people will actually use it (and a light rail line to downtown/campus from Tweed)
2) Faster, more comfortable train service to New York
3) A short connector light rail that would connect New Haven Union Station to downtown and campus. Just getting to the train station from campus (i.e. via taxi) takes way too long, takes extra planning, and is expensive (I'll walk when it's light out and I'm not carrying much, but that's still a long walk).
i really have to agree with # 2
A faster more comfortable train to NY,but they do have the Acela,a business coach on the Metro North, The Amtrak seats are'nt too bad although it's a little more money.
There is the J bus that makes that trek every hour,it stops on the green at Temple and Chapel. It not too bad on a bicycle,The Taxi guys are'nt too thrilled about all of the bikes there.
Tweed is a patronage dump,i don't think they ever took it seriously in regards to expansion,New Haven's been getting it's ass waxed by East Haven ,shooken down by a school yard bully.suits the Mayor just fine,
Ya know what you can do is put the runway right on route 34 connector -The Hospital wont mind
Please expand Tweed!! Yale is pretty much the only cosmopolitan place in the world where you have to travel 3 hours to get to a decent airport...also, we need to be able to compete with Harvard and Princeton on everything-but on the issue of airport accessibility / connectivity to the world they have us beat. I guess Bradley is only an hour away but there aren't that many flights from there and there's no public transit there (CT Limo does not count).
