Intersections raise safety questions

Staff Reporter

The intersection of South Frontage Road and York Street was bustling during rush hour Monday evening.

As cars sped down South Frontage — often running red lights in the process — and batches of Yale-New Haven Hospital staffers stood at the crosswalk waiting their turn, it may have been easy to miss the bouquet of flowers sitting on the sidewalk around a street post.

A single white ribbon tied in a bow just above the flowers commemorated the death of Mila Rainof MED ’08, the 27-year-old Santa Monica native who was hit by a car at the intersection Saturday morning and died...

What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to this student's family & friends.

I'm sorry that we don't have safe streets & better enforcement of traffic laws: it's a goal many of us are working toward to, & I sincerely hope that we can manage to improve the safety & security of the streets in the near future, to prevent other tragic deaths.

It is time for a crackdown on this kind of disgusting behavior. Speeders should be given reckless endangerment charges and sentenced to jail time. Speeders who cause accidents should face severe felony charges. Anyone who causes a pedestrian injury while speeding should be given an attempted murder charge and face a minimum jail time of 10 years.

always cross on the same side as the emergency room ,that will cut down on being hit from the left (turning right on red)..i know that it's tough with throngs of people pushing from behind.
Like Wildebeests into the croc pool

This kind of bad driver behavior happens ALL over New Haven. It's outrageous. Just stand at ANY intersection and count the number of cars that go through red lights. We need a serious crackdown.

What is the URL for the petition?

Yes, what is the URL? I would like to sign. It would be a good idea to do a follow-up piece on the outcome of the petition.

Seriously - this kind of thing does NOT happen to the same degree in cities which are populated by civilized human beings -- I've lived in a dozen of them in the US and elsewhere, and New Haven is WAY more barbarian than any other. People here are just savage beasts on the road. The response from the government is appalling but sadly not surprising.

If the Route 34 freeway had been extended past the Air Rights garage as planned in the 1990s, would this death occurred?
