Murder on the rise in Elm City

Although slightly fewer people were non-fatally shot in New Haven in 2008 than in 2007, the number of homicides in the city increased by 69 percent, according to figures released by the New Haven Police Department.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and New Haven Police Department Chief James Lewis said there were 22 murders in the city last year, up from 13 in 2007. But alongside the uptick in homicides, the Elm City also saw a continued increase in burglaries and larcenies in 2008.

Apparently we're supposed to be comforted by the fact that, while the murder rate went up 69%, there were 7 less shootings this year... sigh

And what could be the racial breakdown of the perpetrators? No one ever wants to ask these questions - the answers might say something no one wants to know.

A real reporter would ask, however...
