Last fall, New Haven Police Department Chief James Lewis promised that the department would conduct weekly prostitution stings until the city no longer had a prostitution problem.

But in the past four months, the NHPD has not conducted a single prostitution sting. Lewis said Tuesday, however, that the stings are not necessarily a thing of the past.

“The strategy of prostitution stings will continue as long as this is a problem and complaint of those living in the neighborhoods,” he said in an e-mail message.

The last sting the NHPD conducted occurred Dec. 5. In that...

I'm sure New Haven suddenly (after 5000 years) has a magic formula for ending prostitution.

Better to focus on drug sales.

Leave the ladies of the night alone (so to speak).

There are more than enough deadly drivers at the Prospect St bridge and the New Haven cemetary crosswalk to keep the police busy all day if they're no longer spending all their time on drugs and prostitutes.

So we should pay our police force to go after people committing traffic violations instead of state and federal crimes? Just because you don't like the law doesn't mean it shouldn't be enforced. We have the power to vote for a reason. If you don't like something, try to get it changed. If you can't, then obviously not enough people agree with you. The solution would not be to get wasted during your free time and hope that laws you don't like suddenly cease to be enforced.

why are these stings trying to go after prostitutes?

If there are to be stings, they should certainly be going after johns instead. If you dry up demand, the rate of prostitution will go down, and you don't have to throw in jail lots of women who are already in pretty desperate straits.

Running down pedestrians at a crosswalk is against state law. If you don't like that, maybe a solution is to not drive like a criminal.
