Zoning board rejects Toad’s terrace
In a divided 3–2 decision Wednesday night, the Board of Zoning Appeals voted to reject a proposal by Toad’s Place owner Brian Phelps to create a 400-square-foot rooftop terrace, citing a potential strain on neighborhood parking.
Plans for the terrace had been widely expected to gain approval from the BZA, since the City Plan Commission ruled in August that Toad’s expansion would not unduly burden local traffic and parking. But Wednesday’s ruling puts the construction of the terrace — which would have increased the club’s maximum capacity by 40 people, to 750 from 710 — on hold unless...
Old Blue is correct. I never notice the city govt getting exercised over the fact that Yale routinely takes over parking spots all over the place, whether for construction or for some shindig. "Potential strain on neighborhood parking"? Yeah right.
I sympathize with the owner but, as a morsel, this would suck as most of the new senior suites fce toads. The last thing I want to look at is a giant wooden fence and I certainly don't want to listen to 4 people talking outside on the roof.
Wow, totally LAME.
This is very disappointing. New Haven does not have many places where people can get really drunk, many a big nuisance of themselves, and force the police to get involved in childish antics. And it is also important to spit in Yale's eye whenever possible. I hope Toad's gets to do this eventually.
As usual yale and the city use's some stupid loop hole. There would be no burden on parking. As it is already there is no parking by toads place. And for all you seniors complaining about having to view a fence, and hear people. Thats crap also. Because putting people on the roof would get them off the sidewalk. Either way people will be outside, on the roof or on the sidewalk. Personally I'd rather not see them on the street.
Yale throws its weight around again. Toad's owner needs to apply a little soft soap to the right parts of the right Yale people (figuratively) to get the votes he needs.
