J. Press takes pride in ‘preppy’ clothing legacy

J. Press is not afraid to admit that it caters to a specific crowd.

“We’re continuing the Ivy League tradition — that’s the whole point of our existence,” said Denis Black, the general manager of the New Haven and Cambridge, Mass. branches of the store. “Our typical clientele are very well-educated, upper-income people.”

In a time where fads change more quickly than the drop of a bowler hat, the men’s store — founded in New Haven in 1902 — is widely known for selling preppy fashions with high price tags.

And 105 years later, it prides itself on remaining true to...

Jesus - if I had known that J Press was Yalie I wouldn't have bought clothes there for God knows how many years

I would note, however, that J Press has done its best to disassociate itself from Yale - if any of you ever get to New York you will find that it has moved several (okay, a couple) of blocks further away from the Yale Club, which is fine with me

I wouldn't say that J. Press has done its best to disassociate itself from Yale, seeing as it continues to sail Yale residential college scarves.

Also, I'm SURE that J. Press is moving a few blocks away from the Yale Club in the city because of the very existence of the club. Clearly, J. Press is focusing on the despicable location of just that one building...
