Last Thursday, Yale University received $772,529 for research projects from the National Institutes of Health as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Of the funds, $680,100 is going toward testing the effectiveness of a diet and exercise program at reducing obesity and related illness in mentally ill patients. The remainder of the funding is going toward the upgrade of a high-throughput genetic analyzer so researchers can collect data in a more cost-effective manner. To date, the Department of Health and Human Services, through which the NIH funding is distributed, has disbursed over $13 billion of the almost $29 billion available to it through the Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
