On JuicyCampus, anonymous posts pick Yale apart

Who is the hottest couple on Yale’s campus? Yale College Council President Rebecca Taber ’08 and star running back Mike McLeod ’09 — at least according to JuicyCampus.com.

The Web site, launched last August by 2005 Duke University graduate Matt Ivester, allows students at almost 60 colleges to anonymously start threads and post comments.

Students at several colleges across the country have expressed concern about the Web site, which they say provides an anonymous forum on which to bash classmates. But response to the site at Yale has been relatively muted, likely because...

Why did you publish this trashy ad for JuicyCampus?

The YDN has finally outdone itself. Never before have I been so impressed by the pure idiocy of this publication. Why would you write an article on a topic that you admit to be essentially a non-issue on campus? You know how it becomes an issue? WHEN YOU WRITE A FRONT-PAGE ARTICLE ABOUT IT. Once again the YDN is at the forefront of stirring up unnecessary controversy on campus. Kudos.

It was a real shame that the YDN published this article to begin with, let alone on the first page. To review:

-Here is a website where you can anonymously defame anyone at Yale
-The content on the site (ex: this girl is fat, this guy is ugly, that girl is a huge slut, etc) has seriously hurt thousands of students across the country
-Fortunately, at an institution of higher learning such as Yale, we do not encourage petty cheap-shots taken anonymously at fellow students for the entire college (let's hope parents don't get a hold of this site) to see
-It would be really unfortunate if Yalies found out about this
-Well, thankfully they haven't, so we'll put up what is essentially an ad for it on the front page of the paper
-Finally, the author makes the site seem as if most of the posts are as flowery as "who is the cutest couple?" and "who is most likely to be president", when in reality they are more along the lines of "who is the biggest slut at Yale?" and various personal character defamations.

I chose Yale over Harvard because I was told students here were friendlier and less calculating. It's easy to defame people on this site for a variety of reasons - job competition, someone stole your girlfriend, etc, but let's try to be civil and above that. The reality is that the site's posters are cowards, and the site's owner profits off of the insecurities, jealousies, and schadenfreude that keep people coming back for more. Let's be above this...or least save it for the Harvard kids.

The YDN has shown itself again to lack any journalistic integrity. It was a poor decision to open an article with two individuals' private business for no wrongdoing on their part. Even Rumpus would not do this.

leave it to a lawyer to create something so twisted.

Keep it coming people! The more you make fools of yourself on the web the more money I make. I am involved in recruiting/hiring for major corprations, med schools, law schools, grad schools etc. We check you out on the web so they don't have to. We employ students at many universities just because they have logins for resources only students can legitimately use. Free speech? Yeah. Most college age students don't actually know what that is and just use it as an excuse to be really, really irresponsible. That could destroy your prospects for a job, med school, grad school, etc. But keep it up because it makes money for me. LOL!
