Yale College Dean Peter Salovey GRD ’86 will be the University’s next provost, Yale President Richard Levin announced Wednesday, filling one void in the upper reaches of his administration but opening up another.

The 50-year-old Salovey, a professor of psychology, will take office Oct. 1. A committee has already been formed to recommend his successor, Levin said.

“Peter Salovey is really an extraordinary dean,” Levin said in an interview. “He’s got great judgment, great personal characteristics; he is very well respected by the faculty and he is a real pleasure to work...

Pardom me for coming to Yale a grad student (from another equally esteemed institution) but what does a provost do? I have never heard this word before.

Now the countdown begins until now-Provost Salovey becomes president of Yale. Thoughts on the next Yale College dean? I'm thinking Shankar...

Chase (#2), a Provost is someone who stays for a few years and then leaves to become the President of a university.

Salovey is an excellent choice no doubt.
But, so much for Levin's commitment to diversify his administration as he promised in his email last year. Words are cheap President Levin. Where is your courageous action?

The provost is ostensibly the chief educational and administrative official of the university, which means the Provost's Office juggles faculty/staff hiring issues and educational practices as well as overseeing the economics of Yale (procurement, finance/administration, etc.).

MASTER FRANK KEIL for Yale College Dean! The man has revolutionized Morse College from the ugly stepchild of Yale's college system to one of the most beloved residential colleges at Yale. He was a leader in the push to renovate Calhoun, Morse and Ezra Stiles, and has been on the forefront of financial aid debates. He is a beloved professor and highly-regarded researcher, but most importantly he cares immensely about Yale, teaching, and the over all college experience students receive at our university.

On character, Keil's a great choice, but Cog Sci doesn't exactly fit the bill of "major department head" that seems to be a prerequisite for the job of Yale College dean.

The last couple times, at least. Can the YDN give us some more historical background on deanship selections?

To #2:

#7 adequately described what an average provost does. At Yale, the role is slightly different. Yale provosts are groomed to become Vice-Chancellors at Oxford (Hamilton) and Cambridge (Richard), or Presidents at institutions such as MIT (Hockfield) and Penn (Rodin).

(And, lest ye not understand how the Brits do their thing, the Vice-Chancellor is the 'CEO'; Chancellor is simply an honorary title.)

In other words:

The provost is the #2 administrative position, who would take over for the president if he or she had to leave ...

Place your bets now on which university presidency Salovey will accept in 2-5 years...

Stanford? Chicago? Columbia? Brown? ... evan Yale?
