Levin to visit India

The last time University President Richard Levin visited India, his trip came less than two weeks after the tsunami that devastated much of South Asia Dec. 26, 2004.

As Levin departs this weekend for his second trip to India as Yale’s president, India faces serious challenges once again, although this time the difficulties are more economic than oceanic. Levin is traveling all over the world to "promote" Yale as if Yale actually needs additional publicity. Serious students and faculty members interested in universities in the United States are already familiar with Yale. When Yale's endowment is significantly down for the year and the economy is in a recession, Levin should set an example by cutting such frivolous and lavish international trips. The student body however has nothing to fear because Mr. Levin will be back for the Harvard and Princeton football games!

Yale actually needs additional publicity throughout the world.
Don't judge Yale's reputation from your experience in the United States.
Travel throughout Latin America and even amongst the well educated, the Yale name does not cause as much enthusiasm as the Harvard name, which is very unfortunately.

The trip is not just to increase recognition of the Yale brand, but perhaps increase the opportunities for Yale students in India.

Maybe we are looking at a program similar to Yale-Peking University?
