THE GAME | Frigid weather spoils tailgate

Published Saturday, November 22, 2008

BOSTON — Before freezing through a disappointing 125th Harvard-Yale football game, hundreds of Elis endured an equally cold reception at the scaled-down tailgate.

For two hours before the game, a smaller than usual crowd of students assembled in school colors and shivered in the cold, some of them drinking from illicit flasks — if they were brave enough to take their hands out of their pockets, that is.

The festivities before Saturday’s game were widely expected to be a flop after Harvard last month unveiled stricter regulations for the tailgate. And while students seemed...

"student turnout seemed smaller than in past years.." it is written.

And yet the News also reported that the student allotment of tickets was completely sold out!

'09 - no, no, it was reported that tickets to the GAME were sold out. Last I recall, tickets aren't required for the tailgate.

Maybe your internet's acting up in Dunster.

Harvard sucked. JE Sux! The tennis courts were an awful location, but a lot of us managed to make the best of it. And what better way to counter the cold than with a beer blanket? If only Yale's offense weren't so terrible.

harvard, not the weather, spoiled the tailgate.

Sour grapes! The weather was bitter cold, (not Harvard'd fault), but anyone who wanted booze managed to find it in excess. The fact that Yale was crushed for the second year in a row (and 7th year out of 8) is what "spoiled" the day for grumpy Elis.

I'm sure Harvard alumni had some good tailgates going, but when it comes to student tailgating, Harvard '98 couldn't be more wrong. Since 2004, it's been obvious that Harvard simply does not want student tailgating to exist, and has sought to strangle it in any way that it can. Cambridge is usually more cold than New Haven, but for students, it's always less fun.

Losing is never fun.

...I'll take it from you, given that we still hold a considerable overall series lead. You graduated ten years ago; stop perusing rival dailies and go get a life/some self-esteem.

H'98, you missed the point again. There are never complaints of this nature about the tailgates at Yale, which are better-funded, more inclusive, and unlike this year's, don't end before they've begun. If all you want to do is scream "Losers!" more than I'm sure you did on Saturday, take it to threads about the game itself.

Sounds like you have extensive experience in that department.
