Yale transit launches new dispatch system
Just in time for this weekend’s frigid single-digit temperatures, Yale’s transit services have introduced a new nighttime dispatch system that aims to spare riders from having to wait outside.
The expensive new system, rounding out its first week in service, uses a sophisticated network that matches riders to buses with greater precision. Callers are asked for their NetIDs and their destinations; GPS technology then automatically finds and dispatches the nearest shuttle, and the system robotically calls riders’ cell phones when the bus is approaching.
“We don’t want you...
It would be good if they could get quieter buses to run at night, and with better access for people who can't climb up and down those stairs so easily.
Although I appreciate your idea #1, the underlying problem is not the weather: it's New Haven crime! This elaborate system would be unnecessary if students, faculty, and staff could be safe when returning home/to class at night. Since it's unsafe to walk home as early as 7:30, given the recent armed muggings on/near campus, I'm THANKFUL for this system! I'm not sure what I would do without it.
The buses emit horrible emissions through New Haven. Yale is destroying the environment by running these buses. Yale students should be able to attend classes online during extremely cold winters rather than run these buses and burn additional fuel.
