The News has been suffering from a distinct lack of discussion of the candidates for the Democratic nomination for Ward 1 alderman. Every day, I have found space on this page that has not been covered with text that addresses today’s exciting election, which will definitively determine the winner of the Ward 1 aldermanic race, barring Republicans or embittered Independents.

Why the radio silence? Perhaps potential voters are cynical about the power of aldermen in New Haven’s “strong-mayor” form of municipal government, in which the mayor has wide-ranging administrative power and...

So this is actually my favorite of all the articles covering the Aldermanic race. Entertaining AND informative, now that's hard to find nowadays.

Regardless of what happens, this has been a great election. All three candidates could do a good job, and having it now, rather than in the fall, means that issues actually get talked about. And if you doubt that, consider this:

Humorous parody (see op-ed) doesn't work unless we know enough about them to essentialize and mock them.

Congrats to Zink, but moreso, congrats to the the Ward 1 committee, and the three excellent candidates.
