Two important facts about Yale that I learned before even stepping on campus two months ago: one, it rains an unusual amount here and two, everyone hates Harvard. The first of these facts is proven true almost every other day so imagine my surprise when I walked by Campus Customs on York Street earlier today and saw the bright red Harvard shirt leering at me from the window amidst a plethora of Yale gear ...

"Carousel": A marvel of setting and light

"Carousel" was my first production with the Yale Dramatic Association. While I acted in a number of shows in middle and high school, I worked exclusively on painting and set construction for "Carousel." In my interview with set designer Roger Hanna, it was interesting to discover why Hanna opted to create a set of one circle jutting into another circle. I also spoke with light designer Stephen Quandt, who has taught seminars in the residential colleges and for the Theater Studies department.

Live from the Boardroom: Theo Spielberg '10

Theo Spielberg '10 drops by the Yale Daily News boardroom to play two songs for the first installation of the "Live from the Boardroom" series. The films, directed by Brendan Schlagel, will be posted intermittently over the rest of the semester. Look forward to more great performances from the likes of Conner Youngblood '12, Jacob Paul '13, James Dieffenbach '13 and Nolan Romero Green '12.

Just as Billy Bigelow returns to Earth from Heaven unseen in the Dramat’s fall mainstage “Carousel,” this weekend “Carousel” returned to New Haven. In fact Richard Rogers’ and Oscar Hammerstein II’s tragic story of a carousel barker and his mill-working lover originated in New Haven, as did many of their other classics. While now it is mostly associated with touring company productions of standards — this year features “Annie” among others — the Shubert was once one of the starriest stages outside of Broadway. Marlon Brando performed in the premiere of “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the theater in 1947. Need I say more?

As shoulder-padded, helmet-laden titans of Yale and Harvard clash on the field this Saturday, few will be worrying about who’s laying down tracks at the evening’s festivities. Fewer will be wondering which independent, student-musician supporting venue to hit up for the after-party. Music, it seems, will merely offer a backdrop for Yale-Harvard carousing; the competitive spirit and excitement of The Game takes precedence over Yale Precision Marching Band cacophony and Lady Gaga dance hits alike.

It was covered with inky Xs and Os, but it wasn’t a game of tic-tac-toe or an affectionate note ending in hugs and kisses. He was explaining the rules of football to my elementary-school self, in preparation for The Game.

Art Rocks: Beautiful people, and beautiful art

NEW YORK — The third annual "Art Rocks" party, curated by Emmett Shine & James Cruickshank of the LOLA New York Gallery, was held at the Bowery Hotel in NoHo last Thursday, featuring a top selection of emerging artists — some of whom got their MFA from Yale, like Patrick McElnea ART ’08.

Each artist showcased a selection of their work for one night only, and each piece was for sale, with all proceeds going to benefit the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University. Photographer Tim Barber exhibited the “White Witch” from his “Virgin Snow” series: “The inspiration lies within the Blair Witch movie,” he said, laughing. This was definitely the best piece of the show for me: the black and white photo vividly captures the angst and mystery emanating from an imaginary forest. In my eyes Barber's tales from the wild are the coolest.

Lopakhin dreams of chopping down the cherry orchard that his father and grandfather slaved on, celebrating the purchase with tears dripping down his face amidst romantic orchestral swells ...
