Gordon: GLORIOUS CONSENSUAL SEX IS REAL?
Last Friday the student body received the usual don’t-rape-someone-this-weekend e-mail from Dr. Carole Goldberg, which accompanies such rape-likely occasions as Halloween and the Freshman Screw. Stay safe, it urged, don’t hurt people and, in the third bullet point, it got a little frisky: “It is our wish to […] strengthen the resolve of those who are dedicated to finding just the right words that would lead to glorious, consensual sex (if that’s in the cards).”
“Glorious, consensual sex,” that sounds great! “If that’s in the cards,” that’s an awkward equivocation! We receive...
your article is smart and funny and you bring up very good points. i definitely agree that "rarely in our lives are we instructed how to have sex that is both consensual and glorious." i hate to blame porn entirely for the lack of good lovin though as there are other reasons out there for non-glorious sex...and there is some really great porn out there that values and portrays real sex, women having real orgasms, etc., many of which you can find at the women friendly sex shops like good vibrations (san fran), babeland (nyc, seattle), and early to bed in chicago. sex education should include more information about how to please oneself and his/her partners in addition to the how not to get stds and how not to get pregnant speeches.
Well, now I do feel old. Abortion was still illegal when I was at Yale, and no one in the Yale administration would have so openly mentioned consensual sex, let alone use an adjective like glorious to describe it. Dr. Philip Sarrel was brave enough to teach us about sex, daring the State of Connecticut to tell him not to.
