M. HOCKEY: Eyes on the prize
Expectations for the men’s hockey team have never been so high.
The Bulldogs caught everyone by surprise last year. They went from finishing in sixth place the previous season to being both the regular season and ECAC Tournament champions in 2008-’09.
Although the team bowed out in a disappointing 4-1 loss to Vermont in the NCAA East Regional semifinal in Bridgeport, Conn., last spring, almost all of the key players from last year’s squad have returned this year — and they are ready for more.
“I think we expect more from ourselves and hold ourselves to a higher standard this...
ToomsFan, you have really hit the nail on the head here-BRAVO! In my mind Matthew Thomey is a spot on definition of a roll model. Take a look at all this power hungry athletes in the world today that are motivated by the likes of greed, fame, and their efforts to quell their hunger for self-satisfaction. NOT Matt Thomey. He gives back to the community and plays like a gun-slinging schoolboy wearing wrangler jeans.
On and off the ice Matt oozes with genuine care. Not to mention he shares his zest for life with others and he plays/lifes with relentless vigor.
The New Haven and the Yale Community lost an elemental cog when Matt graduated in 2008. As a New Haven resident I admit I am envious of Newfoundland now that Matt's vibrant personality has returned from wence it came.
"I am just drooling over the thought of Matthew Thomey '08 along with these guys"
I couldn't agree more. Matt Thomey's stride was as pure as the springs of Evian, and leadership that reminds one of King Arthur. What a privilege it was to watch this young man bedazzle goaltenders with his patented backhand snapshot. If only had he played along the likes of the hulking William Engasser and the slippery David Germain could he have achieved more greatness. With Engasser's fortitude of body and mind, Germain's thunderous howitzer, and Thomey's lionesque heart, they surely would have created an unstoppable force.
I am sitting here looking at this roster and I am just drooling over the thought of Matthew Thomey '08 along with these guys. He brought such immense leadership and tenacity to the Yale Bulldogs. I can only imagine what type of presence he would have on this lineup. I heard he is tearing up a league in Newfoundland while dawning the "C" The truth is I miss Matt Thomey, everyone who is a Yale hockey fan misses that guy. Not only was he a fan favorite but he also gave back to the community. I remember him spending hours at food shelf serving chili to those in need. I vote that the new rinks name should be Thomey's Tomb. Thomey, if you are reading this make your way back to New Haven and grace us with your incredible aura.
