JANES: For God, for country and for Yale

Out of Left Field

The administration has a flawed view that undervalues the role of the Yale athlete. But athletes must fight this perception by being better and giving the administration no reason to doubt the value of athletics.

JANES: A book review of sorts

This week, I decided to delve even deeper into the arguments upon which the calculated destruction of the Yale athletic tradition have been based.

JANES: Four Years in Yale Athletics

I've talked about the tradition, the divide created by current policies, and the place of Yale athletics in the community, all with the (admittedly optimistic and so-far disappointed) hope of changing a mind or two in Woodbridge Hall. But with a new month came the realization that I've only got a few more weeks here. Maybe it's some senior sentimentality getting the best of me, but I think it's time to explain why I care so much in the first place.

JANES: Community fans give college sports relevance

Out of Left Field

I’ve always thought the value of sports to be self-evident, a fact wholly and blatantly obvious. Not something that can be quantified in dollars, nor accurately explained with words, nor proven with a well-crafted argument.

JANES: Revisiting the state of Yale sports

Out of Left Field

A restoration of Yale's athletic prominence must begin at the top. The administration needs to value athletes in the admissions process if Yale sports programs are to survive.

JANES: A transition to mediocrity

Yale has set foot on the path leading away from Ivy athletic dominance. The administration’s increasing lack of commitment to athletic recruitment and quality coaching is charting a course to make Yale teams no longer competitive with their peers, a phenomenon to tarnish athletic culture, school spirit, history and tradition.

JANES: Lin great for Ivy athletics

Out of Left Field

New York Knicks guard and Harvard alum Jeremy Lin may be the most visible face of Ivy Leaguers in the pros in the modern era. The NBA’s first Asian-American, Lin excels most not one-on-one or with flashy moments of brilliance, but rather as a consistent team player, which exemplifies the best qualities of a college athlete.

JANES: This season could be one of Yale’s most successful

This could be one of the best years in Yale sports history. Tragedy and off-field issues have distracted from a year loaded with success and potential — and rightfully so — but with statements made, investigations underway and the facts as straight as anyone can hope to get them, it’s time to shift the focus back to the games.

JANES: Light and truth and athletics

“Lux et Veritas.” Light and truth. Hard enough to find one at a time these days in college sports. But the combination? Nearly impossible.

JANES: Just Win

Out of Left Field

Whoever takes the reins from Tom Williams inherits a unique tradition, a talented and hard-working team and, quite frankly, a frustrated Yale football family.
