Nayak talks to supporters

Nayak, the first to declare in the Ward 1 aldermanic race, held a meet-and-greet that around 30 people attended in Blue State Café on Wall Street on Thursday evening. His three main issues were public safety, education, and community development, and he highlighted the interelation between them.
New Haven FBI seizes botnet
New Haven is now at the forefront of another field: cybersecurity. On April 13, the New Haven FBI, located at 600 State St., took over the “Coreflood botnet,” which had been operational for 10 years and infected over 2 million computers. A botnet is a collection of computers that are under the control of a piece of malicious software, and can be remotely controlled to reveal passwords or send out spam.

The top-ranked Princeton women’s crew, described by Head Coach William Porter as “amazing” before the race, took four out of five races on the Housatonic. Yale’s first varsity boat finished three seconds behind Princeton, but eleven seconds ahead of No. 11 Ohio State. Yale rowers said they were disappointed by the loss, but proud to have stayed in the race until the end against such a good crew. Porter said he was pleased with the way the Yale crew raced, despite its loss.

Yale starts new traffic committee
After a report released in 2009 by the Yale College Council and the New Haven Safe Streets Coalition, the University created the Yale Traffic Safety Subcommittee two weeks ago. The subcommittee, which has not yet met, aims to evaluate the ongoing pedestrian safety situation of the University, especially as the University expands geographically to encompass the two new residential colleges. Kirsten Bechtel, Associate Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, who will be chairing the committee, said that changing the mindsets of pedestrians, bikers and drivers in New Haven to foster safer road-sharing was the committee’s priority.

Ugandan AIDS activist talks US failure
The United States is failing to fulfill its promise of universal access to HIV/AIDS medication, said advocate and professor Peter Mugyenyi at a talk Monday. Mugyenyi, director and founder of Uganda’s first HIV/AIDS research center, spoke at the Law School about the great success of PEPFAR, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the way the program had been undermined by the financial crisis and Congress’ recent decision to cut foreign aid.

W. LACROSSE | Women’s lax struggles against BC
Yale women’s lacrosse was shut out for much of Wednesday’s game versus Boston College. No. 16 BC (4–0) continued its undefeated streak as it beat Yale (0–2) 18–4 at the Bulldog’s home opener. The Eagles shut out Yale 11–0 in the first half, controlling the game almost entirely, and allowed only four goals in the second half, while scoring seven more of their own.
Frum talks conservatism, anti-elitism

The Yale women's crew varsity eight boat took first place in the NCAA Championship Grand Final in Gold River, Calif., on May 30 with a time of six minutes and 24.75 seconds. Yale rowed a quick first 500 meters in Lake Natoma to grab the lead, holding on to beat the University of Virginia by two seats. It was the third time in four years that the Yale first varsity boat triumphed at the NCAAs.

W. CREW | Bulldogs drop first race this season
After posting some strong times in the past few weeks — including sweeping the Cayuga Cup despite the first varsity eight running into a bridge — the No. 4 women’s crew team came up short this Saturday against No. 6 Princeton and No. 1 Virginia on Lake Carnegie in New Jersey. The Bulldogs had won their first five regattas of the spring — and were ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point — but finished third overall without winning a race. The second varsity eight and second varsity four each finished in second place in their respective races.
