CROSS COUNTRY | Elis hope to use experience to improve in 2010

The men’s and women’s cross country teams return a core of experienced runners as they look to improve upon seventh and eighth-place finishes, respectively, at last season’s Ivy League Championships.

Injuries and inexperience plagued the men’s soccer team last fall as the Bulldogs put up a lackluster 5–9–3 record overall and 2–5 in conference play to finish tied for last place in the Ivy League with Columbia. But this year, the Elis hope to change that, returning key players despite losing five seniors to graduation and, according to head coach Brian Tompkins, a strong incoming class of freshman recruits.

New swimming coaches named

Tim Wise and Cristina Teuscher are the new head coaches of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, respectively. Frank Keefe, who had been coach of both teams since 1978, retired this year.

Elis to be tested for sickle cell trait

In line with a new NCAA requirement sent to universities on April 13, Yale has begun testing athletes for sickle cell trait, a blood condition that can cause sudden death during strenuous activity.

FOOTBALL | Witt, Elis end spring season

As the football team’s spring season winds down, the Bulldogs are gearing up for their annual Blue-White scrimmage set for Saturday — the 12th and final practice for Yale this spring and the last opportunity for fans and coaches to get a glimpse of next year’s squad on the field before the fall.

W. LACROSSE | Greer ’11 balances two sports

Logan Greer ’11, who is currently in season with the women’s lacrosse team, was also recently named captain of the women’s squash team and will enter the 2010-’11 season as the No. 3 ranked women’s player in the College Squash Association. On the lacrosse field, Greer has six goals and 14 ground balls so far this season for the Bulldogs. Greer gave an e-mail interview with the News on Wednesday to discuss her successes in both sports and what it is like to play two varsity sports at Yale.

Ivy League looks to expand TV coverage

Ivy League sporting events may be coming soon to a television set near you. In an effort to reach out to a wider fan base, Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris said the league is in talks with multiple national cable and satellite television networks in order to form a comprehensive multi-year agreement with a network to broadcast Ivy League sports nationwide.
