Injuries and inexperience plagued the men’s soccer team last fall as the Bulldogs put up a lackluster 5–9–3 record overall and 2–5 in conference play to finish tied for last place in the Ivy League with Columbia. But this year, the Elis hope to change that, returning key players despite losing five seniors to graduation and, according to head coach Brian Tompkins, a strong incoming class of freshman recruits.
New swimming coaches named
Tim Wise and Cristina Teuscher are the new head coaches of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, respectively. Frank Keefe, who had been coach of both teams since 1978, retired this year.
Elis to be tested for sickle cell trait
In line with a new NCAA requirement sent to universities on April 13, Yale has begun testing athletes for sickle cell trait, a blood condition that can cause sudden death during strenuous activity.

W. LACROSSE | Greer ’11 balances two sports
Logan Greer ’11, who is currently in season with the women’s lacrosse team, was also recently named captain of the women’s squash team and will enter the 2010-’11 season as the No. 3 ranked women’s player in the College Squash Association. On the lacrosse field, Greer has six goals and 14 ground balls so far this season for the Bulldogs. Greer gave an e-mail interview with the News on Wednesday to discuss her successes in both sports and what it is like to play two varsity sports at Yale.
Ivy League looks to expand TV coverage
Ivy League sporting events may be coming soon to a television set near you. In an effort to reach out to a wider fan base, Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris said the league is in talks with multiple national cable and satellite television networks in order to form a comprehensive multi-year agreement with a network to broadcast Ivy League sports nationwide.

After a hot start to the season over spring break, the baseball team continued its momentum by winning two of the three games against the New York Institute of Technology this weekend. The Elis (10–6–1) fell in the first of a home doubleheader against the Bears (4-9) 3–2, but came back in the second match to win 4–0. On Sunday the Bulldogs travelled to NYIT’s home field and came from nine runs down to pull out the come-from-behind victory, 13–10.

Finishing touches on Yale Bowl renovations
On Saturday, two groups of brothers, the Jensens and the Kenneys, will celebrate the dedication of two new additions to the Yale Bowl, Jensen Plaza and the Kenney Center, which will signal the end of a four-year, $30 million effort to renovate the home of Eli football that refurbished the stadium’s seating, walls, draining and utilities, among other improvements.

Several years ago, Lisa Hodermarsky, who had recently moved to her new home three blocks from The Yale Bowl, made the mistake of going grocery shopping on the day of The Game. She went in the morning, thinking there wouldn’t be a problem getting to the grocery store — just a mile away — and back.

Hard times continued for the women’s hockey team in their home opening weekend. The Elis (0–4–1, 0–4–0 ECAC) fell to Princeton (4–1–1, 3–0–1 ECAC) 4–0 Friday and to Quinnipiac (5–3–2, 3–0–1 ECAC) 2–1 the following day in what was another difficult weekend offensively for the Bulldogs.
W. HOCKEY: Rough road trip
With only two games under its belt, the women’s hockey team struggled on the road last weekend against two nationally ranked teams who have had substantially more game experience so far this season.
Ivy League drawbacks
On Oct. 16, the Colgate Raiders of the ECAC Hockey Conference played Nebraska-Omaha to a 1-1 tie in what was the Raiders’ third game of the season. Hours before, the Yale men’s hockey team had just started its first practice of the 2009-’10 campaign, a season in which the team will look to repeat as ECAC Champions.

Today. That word can be found on a sticker in the locker of diver Drew Teer ’10. And for Teer, it serves as a constant reminder for him to not take anything for granted. He has consistently been a top performer in the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events for the Elis this season, including two third-place finishes in both events this past weekend against Brown.

It was Senior Day for the University of Connecticut swimming teams on Saturday and a pumped up Huskies squad along with an energetic crowd proved to be a tough matchup for both the Eli teams. The men were able to sneak away with a 152-148 victory, by far their closest meet of the year. The women, who are now struggling with multiple injuries, lost their meet 184-116.

For the men’s and women’s swimming teams, a week of highs against Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania two weeks ago was followed by a week of lows.

SWIMMING | Swim sweeps SCSU in dual meet
It was just another day at the pool for the men’s and women’s swimming teams in their meets over the break. Both teams finished their round of meets by beating Southern Connecticut State University with convincing margins last Sunday Nov. 23. The Bulldogs began the break competing at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University with a limited travel roster. The men finished in fourth place, while the women finished in ninth. After getting their teams back in full force in New Haven, the men beat the Owls 181-112 while the women put up an equally impressive 178-117 final tally.
W. HOCKEY | Yale tops No. 4 BU, falls to UConn
It’s not every day that an Ivy League team upsets a nationally ranked squad, but over Thanksgiving break, the women’s ice hockey team did just that, defeating No. 4 Boston University (8-3-3) in a non-league matchup, 4-1.
