Larsson-Danforth '10 drafted to BoSox

Larsson-Danforth, a Mattapoisett, Mass., native, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 49th round of the 2010 MLB draft on June 9. He was the 1,493rd overall pick.

Bulldog coach Allain '80 tapped to lead U.S. National Junior Team

It looked like it would be more of the same for the slumping baseball team midway through its doubleheader against Harvard on Saturday, but the Bulldogs responded emphatically to end the day on a high note. After a 7–4 loss to Harvard (14–22, 7–7) increased Yale’s losing streak to six games, the Bulldogs (17–19–1, 4–10 Ivy) responded later in the afternoon with a 15–1 demolition of the Crimson in the nightcap.

The baseball team will try to rebound from its worst week of the season and end its five-game losing streak when Yale hosts archrival Harvard for a four-game homestand this weekend.

In its last four games — all losses at Dartmouth — the baseball team scored a combined eight runs. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs (16–18–1, 3–9 Ivy) more than doubled that total in one game, but still ended up losing.

The baseball team’s struggles with Ivy League opponents continued Sunday, when the Bulldogs were swept in their doubleheader at Dartmouth. The Big Green (15–12, 6–4) shut out the Elis (16–15–1, 3–7 Ivy) 3–0 and then took the second game 7–4, as both teams opened up play in the Rolfe Division of the Ivy League.

It was another midweek split for the baseball team on Wednesday. The Bulldogs (16–13–1) lost the first game of a doubleheader to Fairfield, 4–3, after a three-run, seventh-inning comeback by the Stags (13–15). Yale rebounded a few hours later, though, with a 7–3 victory in the nightcap to conclude an eight-game homestand.

A week after losing four games on the road, the Bulldogs (15–12–1, 3–5 Ivy) went 3–1 at home, sweeping their doubleheader with Cornell (6–14, 2–6) on Saturday before splitting their series with Princeton (8–19, 3–5) on Sunday. “We had a nightmare weekend last weekend,” head coach John Stuper said. “For these kids to come back against two teams who are just as good as the teams we played on the road, I’m pretty proud of them.”

Backman, Little named All-American

The top two goal scorers on the nation’s highest scoring offense, Backman and Little led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive regular season ECAC title. Although Backman missed the playoffs with an injury, the Elis still went on to win their first postseason game in 58 years with a 3–2 upset over North Dakota. Backman, who recently signed with the Dallas Stars, had 21 goals this year. Little had 27 goals, leading the nation in goals per game with 0.79. This is the first time that either player has been selected to an All-America team.

Last weekend the baseball team came away empty-handed against two Ivy League opponents on the road. This weekend the Bulldogs will try their luck against some Ivy foes at home, as they host Cornell and Princeton in Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders, respectively.

BASEBALL | Split series with Sacred Heart

The baseball team split a doubleheader with Sacred Heart Tuesday, winning the first game 7–3 before falling to the Pioneers (10-14) 5–4 in the nightcap. Outfielder Andrew Moore ’11 had one of the best games of his season so far, going a combined 4–for–6 with three RBIs and a home run in the two games.

In non-conference play, the baseball team has proven to be a formidable foe. This weekend it will get to see how it stacks up against fellow Ivy League teams. The Bulldogs (11–6–1) begin Ivy League play this weekend with doubleheaders at Columbia (7–11) and at Penn (9–9) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

M. HOCKEY | Backman signs with NHL’s Stars

An off-the-ice accident may have prematurely ended his Yale career, but Sean Backman ’10 will still get a chance to play at the next level. The Bulldog right winger signed a one-year free agent contract with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars, and he will compete for a spot on the Stars or one of its affiliates at the team’s training camp this upcoming fall.

Bulldogs stun UND, outgunned by BC

Right winger Broc Little ’11 scored Yale’s seventh and last goal with less than two minutes left against top-seeded Boston College at Sunday’s NCAA Northeast Regional final. But it was not enough to overcome the Eagles and send the Elis to the Frozen Four.

The baseball team is having one of its best starts in recent history and hopes to continue its hot streak Saturday in its first home games of the season. The Bulldogs (9–5–1) take on New York Institute of Technology in a doubleheader at home before switching over to the Bears’ home field on Sunday afternoon for one contest.

It couldn’t be more of a David vs. Goliath situation for the men’s hockey team when it takes the ice on Saturday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Worcester, Mass. Second-seeded North Dakota is bigger: Its top three goal scorers are 6 foot 2, 5 foot 11 and 5 foot 11. The Bulldogs are 5 foot 9, 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 8.

M. HOCKEY| Allain returns home for NCAAs

In his four-year tenure as Yale head coach, Keith Allain ’80 has led the men’s hockey team to new heights. But if the upward trend is to continue this year, that means the No. 8 Bulldogs will have to defeat No. 4 North Dakota in the semifinals of the NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday — in Allain’s hometown of Worcester, Mass.

Yale supplies tickets and transport to NCAA hockey finals

Free bus transportation to Worcester will be offered to Yale students and will leave before the 1:30 p.m. game between No. 1 Boston College and No. 4 Alaska. The bus will then leave immediately after the 5 p.m. game between No. 2 North Dakota and No. 3 Yale. If Yale wins its game, another bus will leave from New Haven on Sunday in time to catch the 5:30 p.m. finals. The regular price for the tickets is $85. Only students with tickets will be able to use the free buses.

The No. 6 men’s hockey team lost 3–2 to Brown in the first game of the ECAC Tournament quarterfinals. Yale must now win on Saturday to avoid elimination and force a third game on Sunday.

6:55pm: The ECAC Quarterfinal matchup between No. 1 seed Yale and No. 11 seed Brown is about to start. These two teams meet in the quarterfinals last year, and Yale swept the series, en route to their first ECAC Tournament championship. The winner of this best-of-3 series will be heading to Albany next weekend.

Three Elis to perform for NFL scouts

Tight end A.J. Haase ’10, linebacker Travis Henry ’10 and punter Tom Mante ’10 will all be participating in Yale’s NFL Pro Day workouts on March 25.

Baseball sweeps UMBC

The Elis are currently 3-0 after a three-game sweep at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Yale defeated the Retrievers 7-3 and 11-3 on Sunday before winning 10-4 on Monday.
