Extein, Gonzalez, Gordon, Moreno and Spencer: Internships worth saving

When we read that the Bulldogs Across America program was under review (“Bulldogs internships under review,” Nov. 18), we decided to speak up on behalf of the program that did so much for us. For its meaningful internships, underexposed cities and dynamic housing setup, Bulldogs Across America is a cut above Yale’s other summer offerings.

Marrone and Extein: State should do more to help community banks

A significant portion of the U.S. population, largely legalized immigrants or those in low-income brackets, do not have bank accounts. Many of these individuals are intimidated by the Bank of Americas, Wachovias and Citibanks of the world, at which impersonal service reigns supreme and a basic knowledge of financial services seems to be a prerequisite to entry. So these people turn to predatory lenders, unscrupulous cash checkers and high-cost remittance agencies. In 2006, the United States was the origin of $42.2 billion worth of remittances, the vast majority of which was sent through unregulated vendors at significant cost to the customer.

Extein and Lerner-Byars: Jones will engage all

Civic engagement has recently become a topic of discussion in the Ward 1 aldermanic race. As policy co-directors of the campaign of Mike Jones ’11, this issue is particularly important to us, because in many ways it is the foundation for the policies we have helped Mike craft over the past few months, and it will help turn our proposals into realities.
