The hills are alive (and profitable)
What brought me to West Rutland, Vermont, was not an interest in the mountainous terrain, but in the rumored owner of the bulk of the land for which a wind turbine project is planned: Yale University.

Welcome to Cross Campus — online
Dear readers, In September, as part of a wider redesign of the News' print edition, Cross Campus debuted in the left-hand column of the Oldest College Daily's front page. With about ten short, pithy blurbs about goings-on around campus, it was an immediate hit with readers. Now, we are excited to bring Cross Campus to yaledailynews.com. The mission of this blog is simple: to tap into the pulse of the Yale campus. Check back in this space for round-the-clock updates from the reporters and editors of the Yale Daily News. And you, too, can get involved! Send in your observations and suggestions to Best wishes, Thomas Kaplan Editor in Chief
Reporting on the inauguration, from Washington to WLH
Dear YaleDailyNews.com readers, As the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama draws near, the Yale Daily News will offer in-depth, behind-the-scenes coverage from Washington and around campus. Just as News reporters traveled on Election Day to report with the Obama and McCain campaigns and with Yale students canvassing all over the country, more than a dozen News reporters will be posted in Washington this week, with many more reporting from around the Elm City. Look for dispatches from Yale-chartered buses barreling down I-95 in the wee hours of Tuesday morning; from the U.S. Capitol as Yale professor Elizabeth Alexander prepares to recite the poem she wrote for the inauguration; and from the National Mall, where hundreds of Yale students will brave the cold to watch Obama's inaugural address. Thank you for reading. Sincerely, Thomas Kaplan Editor in Chief, Yale Daily News editor@yaledailynews.com
Reporting on Election Day, from Wasilla to West Haven
Dear YaleDailyNews.com readers, As the historic 2008 presidential election nears, the Yale Daily News will offer in-depth, student-focused reporting on a scale unprecedented for a college newspaper. Just as the News deployed reporters to cover the caucuses and primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and was one of only two Connecticut newspapers to report from the Democratic National Convention, News reporters have been posted all around the country as Tuesday's election approaches. Look for reports from the headquarters of Sen. Barack Obama in Chicago and Sen. John McCain in Phoenix; from swing states like Virginia and New Hampshire; from America’s heartland, where a Yale alumnus is staging a long-shot bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska; and from a few more far-flung locales, including Wasilla, Alaska. Of course, we will also be on the ground around the Yale campus and in New Haven, monitoring the polls and chronicling the reactions of students as the returns come in on Tuesday night. Thank you for reading. Sincerely, Thomas Kaplan Editor in Chief, Yale Daily News editor@yaledailynews.com

Eliminating university tuition would cost only 0.8 percent of endowment, but experts skeptical
Last year was a good one for David Swensen GRD ’80, the University’s chief investment officer. Under his watch, the Yale endowment rose to $22.5 billion, nearly four times where it stood just a decade earlier. In one year alone, the investment income produced by the endowment amounted to $5 billion, more than the entire endowments of Brown and Dartmouth.

Hamilton left mark on sciences
It can be said that former Provost Andrew Hamilton, who is now enjoying the first week of what he calls a “gap year” before he becomes vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford next fall, is still a scientist first, an administrator second. And professors on Science Hill say it was that passion that allowed the smartly tailored Briton to leave such a mark on the sciences at Yale.
Endowment spending may be mandated
