Fans filled the stands of the John J. Lee Amphitheater on Saturday to bid Yale’s senior gymnasts goodbye in their last home meet of the regular season.
The Yale gymnastics team continued to face difficulties Saturday at the Fox Run Invitational as injuries forced the Elis to enter only four competitors in three of the four events — a marked disadvantage in a sport where five scores are totaled to calculate the team score.
Over break, the Yale gymnastic team opened its season with a solid first place finish at MIT. Despite injuries, the team rallied to a strong 182.8-point finish, with captain Alina Liao ’09 winning the all-around competition.
Alina Liao ’09 tied a career best in the all-around with a score of 38.675 at the NCAA Regional Championships at University Park, Penn.
Alina Liao ’09 took fifth place individually, but the gymnastics team finished seventh out of eight teams at this past weekend’s ECAC Championships in Williamsburg, Va.
At their biggest meet of the season, the gymnasts settled for second. Cornell won the Ivy League Championship with a 191.8, Yale placed second with a 189.05, and Penn (188.025) and Brown (186.725) brought up the rear in third and fourth place, respectively.
At their last home meet of the season, the women’s gymnastics team lost a close competition to Rutgers this past weekend on Senior Day.
Four gymnastics teams showed up in New Hampshire for the Fox Run Invitational, but there were just two that dominated the individual events and the final standings.
A team sends six athletes to compete in each event, with the top five scorers counting toward the team score. Occasionally, a seventh gymnast will participate as an exhibitionist, although her score does not count toward the team or individual rankings.
